About this worksheet

The first rung of a three-step ladder. The fish and the treasure chest appear again at level 2 and level 3, on grids that get denser each time while the picture stays exactly the same. Keeping the characters fixed is the point: when the only thing that changes is the maze, a child can feel the difficulty move rather than having to work out what is different.

Treasure chests belong to pirate stories, and fish belong to the sea those stories sail on, so this pairing comes with a ready-made adventure. Ask what might be inside the chest and who could have dropped it. The same fish and chest appear on the level 2 and level 3 sheets, so keep the finished page: laying all three side by side later shows a child how far they have come.

There is exactly one way through: no loops, and no square cut off from the rest.

How to use this sheet

Treat this as the warm-up for the harder two. Let your child choose a color for the fish's route and use the same color on levels 2 and 3 when you get to them. Date the corner of the page so the three finished sheets can be compared later.
