What your child practices

  • Plans a route before committing a pencil to it
  • Recognizes a dead end and backs out of it
  • Holds concentration through a long, multi-step task
  • Keeps a drawn line inside a boundary

About this worksheet

A turtle is the right animal for the page that rewards going slowly. The route winds almost continuously — 57 squares with 35 changes of direction, which is barely two squares straight before it turns again. Children who like to draw fast come off the line here, which is the whole argument for tracing it with a finger first.

Ten cells across puts the corridors a little over one and a half centimeters wide. Still wide enough for a pencil held in a whole-hand grip, but narrow enough that staying inside the lines is now part of the task rather than a given.

The way through runs 57 squares and turns 35 times, with 13 dead ends branching off it. The grid is carved so that exactly one route connects the start to the finish: no loops, no second way round, and no corner walled off from the rest. Every square can be reached, and a child who follows the route carefully will always get there.

How to use this sheet

Trace the route with a finger first, then go over it with a pencil. Separating the thinking from the pencil work means neither one spoils the other.
