About this worksheet

The goal here is home rather than food, which reads differently to a child — the bird is not hungry, it is lost. Fourteen dead ends on a 51-square route makes this one of the busier level 2 sheets, so expect some backing out along the way.

Birds build nests from twigs, grass, moss and even bits of string, weaving them together with their beaks. Many birds use a nest only for raising chicks, not for sleeping. Ask your child what they would build a nest from, and point out how many choices this bird has on the way home: plenty of forks, and several lead nowhere.

There is exactly one way through: no loops, and no square cut off from the rest.

How to use this sheet

Ask your child to look two or three squares down each branch before taking it, the way a bird checks a branch before landing. When a path dead-ends, go back to the fork rather than the start. Finish by drawing a twig or two into the nest.
