Circle the First Letter: Set 3

Six pictures run down the page: a car, an elephant, grapes, a monkey, a turtle, and an umbrella. Beside each are four capital letters. Your child says the picture's name and circles the letter the word starts with.

Hearing the first sound of a word, and knowing which letter stands for it, is one of the first steps toward reading. With four letters in each row instead of three, your child has to look at every letter before choosing. The answers are C, E, G, M, T, and U, none of which were answers in sets 1 and 2.

Say each word slowly and stretch its first sound, like "mmmonkey" or "ttturtle." Elephant and umbrella start with vowel sounds, which are harder to hear, so say those two a few times.
