About this worksheet

A ladybug walking to a leaf is about the lowest-stakes errand in the set, and that is the appeal. Nothing is lost or hungry, so there is no urgency in the picture to work against a child who wants to take a long time over it. The red shell against black walls also makes the starting corner easy to find again after a break.

Ladybugs spend much of their lives on leaves because that is where aphids, their favorite food, gather. Counting spots is the obvious thing to do with a ladybug, so count them together before starting, then compare that number with how many dead ends your child finds on the way. The route is short but turns often, which keeps a small hand busy.

There is exactly one way through: no loops, and no square cut off from the rest.

How to use this sheet

Count the ladybug's spots first, then solve the maze, keeping a tally of the dead ends met along the way. Ask which number is bigger. The route turns sixteen times in a short distance, so encourage small, careful finger movements rather than big sweeps.
