About this worksheet

The most forked sheet at level 1: 11 dead ends against a route of 27 squares, which works out at a false turning for roughly every second square traveled. A child who reads ahead will find this no harder than the others. A child who commits to the first opening they see will spend real time backing out of things, which is the skill the page is for.

This is a level 1 maze: 8 cells across, with corridors a shade under two centimeters wide. That is roomy enough that a five year old's pencil control is never the thing holding them up, so the page is purely about finding the way.

The way through runs 27 squares and turns 17 times, with 11 dead ends branching off it. The grid is carved so that exactly one route connects the start to the finish: no loops, no second way round, and no corner walled off from the rest. Every square can be reached, and a child who follows the route carefully will always get there.

How to use this sheet

Trace the route with a finger first, then go over it with a pencil. Separating the thinking from the pencil work means neither one spoils the other.
