What your child practices

  • Plans a route before committing a pencil to it
  • Recognizes a dead end and backs out of it
  • Holds concentration through a long, multi-step task
  • Keeps a drawn line inside a boundary

About this worksheet

Very nearly the longest route on the site at 89 squares, and yet one of the more forgiving level 3 sheets, with 15 dead ends. The length is the difficulty here rather than the decisions, which makes it a fairer first 12 by 12 than its size suggests.

Twelve cells across brings the corridors down to about one and a third centimeters. At that width the pencil work is genuinely part of the difficulty, so these sheets suit a child who has already stopped needing to rest their whole hand on the page to draw a straight line.

The way through runs 89 squares and turns 54 times, with 15 dead ends branching off it. The grid is carved so that exactly one route connects the start to the finish: no loops, no second way round, and no corner walled off from the rest. Every square can be reached, and a child who follows the route carefully will always get there.

How to use this sheet

Trace the route with a finger first, then go over it with a pencil. Separating the thinking from the pencil work means neither one spoils the other.
