About this worksheet

Writing a numeral and understanding what it means are two separate pieces of learning, and this sheet deliberately puts them side by side. The left of each row is a tracing exercise for the numeral itself; the right shows exactly that many shapes.

That pairing matters. A child who can write a beautiful 5 but cannot hand you five blocks has learnt a shape, not a number. Counting the cluster aloud while tracing builds the link between the symbol and the quantity — what teachers call one-to-one correspondence.

Numbers 1 to 5 are the right starting range for most three and four year olds. Once these feel comfortable, move on to the 6 to 10 sheet rather than jumping straight to counting to twenty.

How to use this sheet

Ask your child to touch and count each shape out loud before tracing the numeral next to it. Counting aloud is doing most of the work here.
