What your child practices

  • Draws the tall line and bump of R in order
  • Brings the bump back to the line halfway down
  • Starts the leg on the underside of the bump, partway out from the line
  • Slants the leg out to the bottom right

About this worksheet

R is a P that grows a leg. The model numbers three strokes: the tall line, the bump at the top that closes at the middle, and a leg that slants from the middle down to the bottom right.

It asks for a straight line, a curve and a slant in one letter, which is why it tends to arrive late. The leg often starts from the wrong place, down at the foot of the tall line, or gets left off so that only a P remains.

Say "down, bump, kick". Rabbit, rain and rocket begin with R. If your child can already write P, tell them they know two thirds of this letter.

How to use this sheet

Trace the big R with a finger and find dot 3 on the underside of the bump; that is where the leg begins. Check that spot on the first few your child writes.
