What your child practices

  • Starts capital S near the top right
  • Curves one way, then the other, without lifting
  • Finishes the stroke at the bottom left
  • Keeps the top and bottom curves about the same size

About this worksheet

S is a single stroke with one numbered dot, near the top on the right. The pencil curves over to the left like the start of a C, swings back across the middle, then curves round the other way and finishes at the bottom left.

It is the only capital that changes direction halfway through, and it is among the most reversed letters in the alphabet. A backwards S at four or five says nothing about a child except that they are four or five.

Call it a snake and trace the big one with a finger a few times, hissing. Sun, sock and snake begin with S. Bigger is easier here, so go over the top row twice if you can.

How to use this sheet

Expect reversals and do not erase them. Trace the model together, then let your child try again on the next letter. Air-writing a huge S first helps more than extra tracing.
