What your child practices

  • Draws the tall line of K first
  • Slants in from the top right to touch the line
  • Starts the third stroke on the slant, not on the line
  • Controls two slanting strokes in different directions

About this worksheet

K takes three strokes and the model numbers them. The tall line comes first. The second stroke starts up at the top right and slants in until it touches the line. The third starts partway along that slant and kicks out to the bottom right.

Getting the two slants to meet is the hard part. They often miss each other, or the kick sets off from the tall line instead and the two slants never touch.

Say "down, slide in, kick out" as a rhythm. Kite, key and kangaroo start with K, and a kangaroo's kick is a handy picture for the last stroke.

How to use this sheet

Slants are harder than straight lines at this age, so expect wobbles. Trace the big K with a finger twice before the pencil, pausing where the second and third strokes meet.
