What your child practices

  • Draws the straight line of D from top to bottom
  • Returns to the top to start the curve
  • Makes the curve wide enough to give D a round shape
  • Joins the curve to the bottom of the line

About this worksheet

D has two strokes and both begin at the same spot, the top of the tall line, so the model shows its two numbered dots side by side. First the straight line down. Then back to the top, and a wide curve out to the right that swings round to meet the bottom of the line.

The curve is where the effort goes. Children often flatten it into a second straight line, which gives a thin D that is hard to tell from an I, or start it from the bottom and work up.

Ask for a big round tummy on every D. Dog, duck and door are good words to say while tracing, and drawing a face inside one finished D is a fair reward.

How to use this sheet

Have your child stop after the straight line, lift the pencil, and find the top again before starting the curve. That pause is the whole trick with D.
